General Notes:
J.Allen Giles writes, "When John was quite a lad, his mother took him to the funeral of one of her relations, and to hear the will read. She expected Southwick House and the adjoining estate to be bequeathed to her, however, much to her disappointment, it was left to a little girl named Ann Starr. My worthy great-grandmother went home with her son John to digest her chagrin as best she might. Never mind, mother, said he. I'll get back Southwick House some day or other! and he did so, for not many years after, he married Ann Starr, and so became possessed of the best estate in the whole of that large parish."
