103 Captain S. Sage, 30th Native Infantry. Sutlej Campaign Medal 1845-1846 Indian Mutiny Medal 1857-1858 (Capt. Futtehghur Levy) Shakespeare Sage, b: 9 Jan 1824, son of Reverend Charles Arthur Sage and Caroline nee Quilter. The Reverend baptised his son at Southminster, Essex on the 11 Jan 1824. Shakespeare gained a direct entry to the East India Company's Army. He arrived in india in 1842 and was posted to the 30th Bengal Native Infantry with which Regiment he served at the battle of Aliwal and was awarded the medal for the Sutlej Campaign at Aliwell. He was on 'Europe Furlough' when the Mutiny occurred and like many others was recalled to India. The 36th B.N.I. had mutinied and no longer existed so Sage was appointed as Interpreter to H.M.S, 82nd Foot Regiment. After the Commander in Chief's force had retaken 'Futtehhurh' from the mutineers Sage was ordered to remain there and to raise and command the 'Futtehhurh Levy' on the reorganisation of the Bengal Army. The regiment was numbered the 34th (Futtehhurh) Regiment Native Infantry and Sage remained its Commanding Officer until he was posted to the 37th (Meerut) N.I. as 2i/c. He died on 10 July 1865 in Folkestone, Kent, England.
