Edward Hull (21 May 1829 - 1917), M.A. , L.L.D. , F.R.S. , A geologist and stratigrapher , held the position of Director of the Geological Survey of Ireland . He was also a professor of geology in the Royal College of Science , Dublin . His dates are listed in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography . He was born in Antrim , Ireland , the eldest son of the Reverend J.D. Hull. He graduated BA from Trinity College, Dublin . He joined the Geological Survey of Ireland and worked in Wales and on the Lancashire Coalfield . He worked for the Geological Survey of Scotland (1867-1868) and led an expedition to survey parts of Arabia Petraea and Palestine (1883). He became Director of the Irish branch of the Survey and retired in 1891. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in June, 1867. He was President of the Royal Geological Society of Ireland in 1873. Edward Hull's obituarist wrote of him, "He maintained the honour of a gentleman." Ref: Wikipedia.
Timeline 1829 Born May 21st in Antrim of Irish stock. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin; took B.A. and Engineering Diploma. Attracted to geology by Thomas Oldham, through him joined Geological Survey 1850. First field work in North Wales under J.B. Jukes. Then in Gloucester, Thames Valley and the coalfields of Cheshire and Lancashire. 1867 Geological Survey of Scotland formed as separate branch and Hull appointed District Surveyor and second in command. Stationed at Glasgow, mapped Clyde coalfield. 1867 Elected to F.R.S. 1869 Appointed to succeed Jukes as Director of Geological Survey of Ireland (post held until retirement). Prepared new general geology map of Ireland, 8 miles = 1 inch, completed 1 inch maps and descriptive memoirs. Also held Professorship of Geology in Royal College of Science, Dublin. 1883 Sent to Palestine by Palestine Exploration Society. 1890 Murchison Medal. 1890 Retired from Survey. Lived in London, continued writing. Member of Coal Commission of 1901-5. 1910 Published "Reminiscence of a strenuous life". 1917 Died October 18th. THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me EDWARD HULL of 14 Stanley Gardens Kensington in the County of London Fellow of the Royal Society I appoint my dear brother Edmund Charles Pendleton Hull of Earlswood Mount Redhill in the County of Surrey Gentleman and my eldest son Edward Gordon Hull M.D. of Beaufort Lodge Streatham Common in the County of Surrey and John Sheldon Hepworth of 15 South Street Finsbury in the County of London Solicitor (hereinafter called my Trustees) to be the EXECUTORS and TRUSTEES of this my Will. I give to my son Edward Gordon Hull M.D. a legacy of five hundred pounds I give to my daughter Mrs, Alice Catherine Twigg wife of John Hill Twigg Esquire a legacy of two hundred and fifty pounds I give to Mrs Charlotte Elizabeth Ferguson Davie wife of the Reverend Charles James Ferguson Davie of the Delhi Mission Rewari India a legacy of two hundred and fifty pounds I give to my youngest son Charles Murchison Hull of the Colonial Office Pietermaritzburg Natal a legacy of two hundred and fifty pounds I give to the said John Sheldon Hepworth a legacy of twenty five guineas all the above mentioned legacies to be paid to the respective legatees free of legacy duty and whereas I have from time to time advanced sums of money to my son the said Edward Gordon Hull which to the present date amount to the sum of eight hundred pounds and of which he has from time to time repaid to me three hundred and twelve pounds leaving a balance of four hundred and eighty eight pounds still due to me now I hereby waive all claims to have such sums repaid to my estate and declare that such advances to my said son aforesaid shall be considered to be gifts made to him by me at the time or respective times when such advances were respectively made as aforesaid I give devise and bequeath all my real and personal estate not hereby otherwise disposed of unto my trustees upon trust that my trustees shall sell call in and convert into money the same or such part thereof as shall not consist of money and shall with and out of the moneys produced by such sale calling in and conversion and with and out of my ready money pay my funeral and testamentary expenses and debts and the legacies bequeathed by this my Will or any Codicil thereto and shall stand possessed of the said residuary trust funds in trust as to two thirds thereof for my daughter Eleanor Henrietta Hull and as to one third thereof for my daughter Mary Constance Hull absolutely and I declare that my trustees may postpone the sale and conversion of any part of my real and personal estate (including leaseholds or other property of a terminable or wearing out nature) for so long as they shall think fit and that they shall not sell or convert into money reversionary property before it falls into possession Unless in their opinion it shall be necessary to do so to prevent loss and that the rents profits and income to accrue from and after my decease of and from such part of my estate as shall for the time being remain unsold and unconverted shall after payment thereout of all incidental expenses and outgoings be paid and applied to the person or persons and in the manner to whom and in which the income of the proceeds of sale and conversion would be payable or applicable under this my Will if such sale and conversion had been actually made and I declare that any Executor or Trustee of this my Will being a Solicitor shall be entitled to charge and be paid for all work and time expended by him or his firm in relation to the Executorship or trust including acts which a trustee not being in any profession or business could have done personally IN WITNESS whereof I have to this my Will set my hand this twenty ninth day of December one thousand nine hundred and five EDWARD HULL Signed by the said Edward Hull the testator as his last Will in the presence of us both being present at the same time who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
