ALFRED HENRY DARE: An A.H. Dare was a junior at HSBC Yokohama in 1878, recruited in the East p232 History of Hongkong Shanghai Bank, Frank H.H. King "The last junior to be recruited in the East was A.H. Dare, a relative of Thomas Jackson's wife, and his entire career (with the exception of a year in Amoy in 1883) was spent in Japan, although he received leave to England and was on the Eastern, not the "Local British Staff". He resigned in 1893; the Court subsequently learned that the reason had been health and consequently voted him a gratuity of 1,000 pounds."

1. Alfred Henry Dare: Will & Probate, 2 Sep 1924.
I ALFRED HENRY DARE of Beech Haven Hotel Bexhill in the County of Sussex formerly of Yokohama and Kobe Japan hereby revoke all former Wills and testamentary dispositions made by me and declare this to be my last Will.
1. I appoint as EXECUTORS AND TRUSTEES hereof may two sons Alfred Julius Dare of the Construction Department Federated Malay States Railway Kwala-Lumpur F.M.S. Civil Engineer and Norman Fielden Dare of F.M.S.Timah Limited Batu-Gajah Perak F.M.S. Mining Engineer and Charles Augustus Pead of 23 St Leonardo Road Bexhill aforesaid Solicitor who and the survivor of whom and all other the Executors and Trustees for the time being of this my Will are hereinafter referred to as "my Trustees".
2. I bequeath all my silver prizes to my three sons or such of them as shall survive me equally between them so far as may be to be selected by each in turn according to seniority.
3. I give devise and bequeath all my real and personal property not hereby or by and Codicil hereto otherwise disposed of including my one third share under the Will of Edward Earnshaw late of Knaresborough Yorkshire who died in March one thousand eight hundred and eighty one subject to the life interest therein of Mrs G P Owen of Singapore Straits Settlements formerly Mrs George Mildmay Dare unto my Trustees upon trust to sell call in and convert into money (except as hereinafter provided) such parts thereof as shall not consist of money and after payment of my funeral and testamentary expenses duties and debts to stand possessed of the residue thereof and of such parts of my estate as shall for the time being remain unsold (hereinafter called my residuary estate) upon trust to divide the same equally between my three sons Alfred Julius Dare Norman Fielden Dare Harold Dare and my daughter Marjorie Fielden Dare.
4. I declare that the share of my residuary estate hereinbefore given to my said daughter shall not vest absolutely in her and shall not fall by reason of her death by my trustees but shall in any event be retained upon the trusts following namely:-
(a) Upon trust at the discretion of my Trustees to invest the same in any in. vestments authorised by law with power and at the like discretion to vary the same and to hold such investments (hereinafter referred to as the said share) and the income thereof
(b) Upon trust to pay the income of the said share to my said daughter during her life for her separate use without power of anticipation during marriage and after her death
(c) Upon trust as to both capital and income for all or such one or more exclusively of the others or other of the children or remoter issue of my said daughter (such remoter issue to be born within twenty one years of the death of my said daughter) at such time and if more than one in such shares and with such provisions for maintainance advancement and otherwise for the benefit of such children or issue or same or one of them (at the discretion of my Trustees or any other persons) and generally in such manner in all respects as my said daughter shall whether married or single by deed revocable or irrevocable or by Will or Codicil appoint and in default of and subject to any such appointment
(d) Upon trust for all the children or any the child of my said daughter who being male shall attain the age of twenty one years or being female shall attain that age or marry under that age if more than one in equal shares as tenants in common
(e) Provided always that no child of my said daughter who or whose issue shall take by virtue of any appointment under the aforesaid power any share in my residuary estate shall unless my said daughter so direct take any share in the unappointed part of my said daughter's share without bringing the share so appointed into hotchpot and accounting therefor
(f) If there shall be no child of my said daughter who under the trust in default of appointment hereinbefore contained shall attain a vested interest in the said share then such share and the income thereof and any statutory accumulations of income shall be held upon trust for such persons and purposes and generally in such manner as my said daughter shall while not under overture by deed revocable or irrevocable or whether covert or sole by Will or Codicil appoint and subject to any such appointment
(g) Upon trust for my said daughters next of kin ascertained according to and in the shares provided by the Statute for the distribution of the effects of intestates as if my said daughter had died intestate and a spinster 5. I declare that my Trustees shall not sell or convert any reversionary property until it falls into possession unless it shall appear that an earlier sale would be beneficial and shall have power to postpone the sale calling in and conversion of the whole or any part of my residuary estate during such period as they in their uncontrolled discretion shall think proper and so that the income of unconverted property shall as from my death be applicable as income of my residuary estate Provided nevertheless that the shares I hold in the Mountain King Mining Company of 244 Kearny Street San Francisco California shall not be sold without the consent of my said son Norman Fielden Dare.
6. I declare that my Trustees shall be entitled at their discretion instead of acting personally from time to time to employ and pay any other person or persons to transact any business or to do any act of whatever nature in relation to this my Will including the receipt and payment of money without being liable for loss incurred thereby and that any Trustee being a Solicitor or other person engaged in any profession or business shall be so employed to act and shall be entitled to charge and be paid all professional or other charges for any business or act done by him or his firm in connection with this my Will including acts which a Trustee could have done personally
IN WITNESS whereof I have set my hand to this my Will this Seventh day of September One thousand nine hundred and twenty.

Alfred married Lena Mary FIELDEN [7729] [MRIN: 458], daughter of Rev William Sutcliffe Haslam FIELDEN [11098] and Jane ECKETT [27671], on 3 Oct 1885 in Christ Church Yokohama Japan. (Lena Mary FIELDEN [7729] was born in 1861 in Fitzroy Melbourne Aust and died in 1906 in Japan.)
