McKELVIE, James Flockhart.
Sheep Farmer of Pukernarama station, Rongotea, N.Z. Dir, Barraud and Abrahams Ltd; Hon. Life Member of Committee,
Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Assoc.; Pres., Rangitikei Racing Club; Pres., Bulls, Sanson, Ohaka, Carnarvon Patriotic Soc.; Patron, Rangitikei Bowling Club, and Takawa Football Club; Member, Manawatu County Council. Born: Lower Rangitikei, N.Z., Aug. Bed, 1870. Son of John and Elizabeth (nee Amon )McKelvie of Edinburgh, Scotland. (Born in Edinburgh 1818. Mr. John McKelvie subsequently journeyed to Aust, where he spent several successful years in contract work in connection with the gold dig-gings, In 1855 he arrived in the Rangitikei district, subsequently taking up the well known property "Flock House.") After completing his education at Wellington College Mr. James McKelvie went to his father's property Flock House station, and on his father's death took over half the estate, renaming his portion "Pukemarama" which means big clear lookout. Flock house was named after the castle of that name in Edinburgh. Served with the Rangitikei Cavalry. Married: Jessie, daughter of David Scott (well-known sheep farmer and racing owner of Rangitikei; he was the best known son of Thomas Scott, the first white man in the Rangitikei district, arriving about 1842).
Issue: One son, Rex McKelvie (educated at Wanganui Collegiate School, he is manager of 'Pukemaralna,'" member
Committee, Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Assoc.) and four daughters. Member Wellesley and Manawatu Clubs, Recreations: Racing owner, "Ngata", "Beau Ideal," "Copper King," and many others have raced in his colours. Represented his college in football. Creed: Presbyterian, Home address "Pukemarama, " Rongotea, N.Z. Deceased.
