General Notes:
Margaret Alexander 1935-2022. Margaret's and her elder sister's early life was spent in Lydford near Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor. A local private school was evacuated there during the war and the family's bias towards a non-state education was thus satisfied. In 1945 both sisters were sent away to boarding school at The Abbey in Malvern, Worcestershire, on reduced fees because of family connection with the principal. Margaret then went on to Princes Christian Training College near Windsor to train as a nursery nurse. She had a few placements and then went out with a Naval family to Gibraltar where she met Michael Turnbull, (1935-1980) a young officer with the Army artillery who was completing his national service. They married in 1960 and had three daughters, of whom I am the eldest. Michael's father was a bank manager who had worked for National Westminster Bank in the northwest - Scarborough, Sunderland, Ripon and Northallerton, and Michael had worked his way through the state grammar school system to a place at Cambridge. After graduating and national service he worked for the financial department of Rootes Group Motors, Morganite Crucible as company secretary, and latterly as financial director of the Water Research Centre, a QUANGO affiliated to British water authorities before the privatisations of the 1980's.
