Harry returned to London to marry, then returned to New Zealand where he went into business as a coal merchant in Dunedin with his brother Edward. However the business was not a success and they went into bankruptcy in 1879.
He and Emily moved to Auckland before returning to England and settling in North London.
After his 2nd marriage Henry planned to go into partnership as a cattle rancher with his cousin John Palmer Smithies in Argentina before receiving the news of John's brutal murder. Preferring life in the colonies he considered returning to New Zealand but that did not eventuate and he worked as a civil engineer in the railway industry.
