The Will of Freeman Sewell,
Surgeon of Stoke by Clare Suffolk.
Dated 18 Feb 1726
In the name of God Amen
I Freeman Sewell of Stoke next Clare in the County of Suffolk surgeon being weak in body but of perfect mind and disposing memory (thanks be to God therefore) revoking all former Wills by me heretofore made I do make and declare this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say first I do commit my soule into the hands of Almighty God who gave it me and my body to the Earth to be decently buried by my Executor hereinafter named And as to my worldly estate which it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give devise and dispose thereof as following Item I give and devise unto Thomas Ward of Stoke next Clare aforesaid gent and to his heirs and assigns for ever all that Cottage or Tenement with the Syier? yard pasture ground premises thereunto belonging with the appurtenances as the same are situate lying and being in Stoke next Clare aforesaid which I lately purchased of Ann Bridge of Stoke aforesaid widow and are now in my own occupation and in the occupation of George Sadler and Peter Livering their heirs assigns or assignees Item I give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Ward the sum of tenn pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid unto him by my Executor hereinafter named within three months next after my decease Item I further give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Ward a Guinea to buy him a ring to be paid unto him by my Executor hereinafter named immediately after my decease Item I do hereby forgive the said Thomas Ward all such sum and sums of money which he shall owe or be indebted to me at the time of my decease upon any amount whatsoever Item I give and bequeath unto Mrs Elizabeth Ward the now wife of the said Thomas Ward the sum of five pounds of lawful money to be paid unto to her by my Executor hereinafter named within three months next after my decease Item I further give and bequeath unto the said Elizabeth Ward one Guinea to buy her a ring to be paid unto her by my Executor hereinafter named immediately after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my god daughter Constance Wood one of the daughters of the said Thomas Wood the sum of five pounds of lawful money to be paid unto her by my Executor hereinafter named within three months next after my decease Item I further give and bequeath under the said Constance Wood my silver tankard to be delivered unto her by my Executor hereinafter named immediately after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my brother in law Moses Alston of Pebmarsh in the County of Essex gent the sum of twenty pounds of lawful money to be paid unto him by my Executor hereinafter named within three months next after my decease Item I further give and bequeath unto my said brother-in-law Moses Alston the sum of twenty pounds to be paid unto him by my Executor hereinafter named within twelve months next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my niece Elizabeth Alston one of the daughters of the said Moses Alston the sum of one hundred pounds of lawful money to be paid to her by my Executor hereinafter named as soon as she shall attain her age of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first happen but my mind and will is that my Executor hereinafter named shall put out the said one hundred pounds at interest upon good security and when the said Elizabeth Alston shall attain to the said age of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first happen as aforesaid then I do hereby order the said sum of one hundred pounds with all the interest due for the same shall be paid unto my said niece Elizabeth Alston by my Executor hereinafter named but my mind and will further is that in case my said niece Elizabeth Alston shall happen to dye before her said legacy shall become due then I do hereby give out of her said legacy unto my said brother in law Moses Alston the sum of forty pounds to be paid unto him by my Executor within six months next after the decease of the said Elizabeth Alston and the residue of her said legacy of one hundred pounds I give unto my Executor Item I further give and bequeath unto my said niece Elizabeth Alston a bond and all the money that is or shall be due whereupon bearing date the sixteenth day of December 1692 made from Charles Harrington of Hedingham Sible in the County of Essex gent to my father William Sewell of Pebmarsh deceased for the payment of forty pounds within twelve months next after the death of the said Charles Harrington and Mary Harrington and I do hereby order my Executor to deliver up the said Bond to her and also I further give and bequeath unto my said niece Elizabeth Alston all my silver spoons and plate (except my silver tankard which I have already disposed of) to be delivered unto her by my Executor hereinafter named immediately after my decease Item I give and devise unto Susannah Page my maid servant all those my two Cottages or Tenements with the Yards and Appurtenances thereunto following which I lately purchased of Samuel Heath? and Richard Woods and the same all situate and being in Stoke aforesaid and now in the several occupations of William Angel and Simon Bareham for and during the term of her natural life and from and immediately after her decease I give and devise the same cottages or tenements and premises with their appurtenances unto the said Thomas Wood his heirs and assigns for ever Item I further give and bequeath unto the said Susannah Page my maid servant my Bedd that I now lye upon with the bedstedd bolster curtains vallance sheets blankets and other things belonging to it to be delivered unto her by my Executor hereinafter named immediately after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my godson Francis Goodie one of the sons of Francis Goodie of ?enson in the County of Suffolk yeoman the sum of five pounds to be paid unto him by my Executor hereinafter named within one year next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my godson James Walford one of the sons of James Walford of Bird Brooke in the County of Essex gent the sum of five pounds to be paid unto him by my Executor hereinafter named within one year next after my decease to buy him a piece of plate Item I give and devise unto my brother William Sewell of Pebmarsh aforesaid grocer all the rest of my freehold and copyhold Messuages Lands Tenements and Hereditments whatsoever and wheresoever in this Kingdom or in Ireland or elsewhere not hereinbefore bequeathed to have and to hold the same premises with their and every of their Appurtenances unto him the said William Sewell my brother and to his heirs and assigns forever Item I give and bequeath unto the poor of the parish of Stoke next Clare aforesaid the sums of five pounds to be distributed amongst them the next Sunday after my Buryall by my Executor hereinafter named as he shall think fit Item I give and bequeath unto the poor of the parish of Pebmarsh aforesaid the sum of fifty shillings to be distributed amongst them the next Sunday after my Buryall by my Executor as he shall think fit Item I further give and bequeath unto my said brother William Sewell all the rest of my goods chattels and personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever not hereinbefore bequeathed he paying my debts legacies and funeral charges Lastly I do hereby make nominate and appoint the said brother William Sewell sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament earnestly desiring him to see the same carefully performed
In witness whereof to this my last Will and Testament contained in two sheets of paper to the first I have subscribed my name and to the second and last my name and Seale this Eighteenth day of February Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred twenty and six
