DEATH OF A PIONEER. The Late Mrs: George Phillips. Another link in the fast diminishing band of pioneers has been severed by the death at her home in Claremont on Thurs last Mrs George Phillips aged 83 years.- The deceased lady was the grand daughter of the late Captain Meares, of the 2nd Life Guards, and the second daughter of Samuel Evans and Vittoria Burges, of Tipperary, near York, whose activities in the development of the Avon Valley from 1830 onwards are a matter of history. Like many others Mrs. Phillips in her early years bore her full share of the trials and discomforts inseparable from early settlement and, when the family moved to Carleton House, Perth the city home of the Burges clan she married Colonel Phillips, then Commisioner of Police for the State. She survived numerous relatives including- three sisters, Misses M and E Burges and Mrs. C ???? whose ages total 252. An affable lady of deeply religious convictions, the late Mrs. Phillips was an indefatigable church worker. With her, the relief of distress was an ideal. The end was peaceful, and she passed away quietly in her sleep. The remains were Interred in the Anglican portion of the Karakatta Cemetery on Saturday last in the presence ot a large number of relatives and friends, Archdeacon Hudleston and the Rev. Mr. Bell officiating;. The following acted as pall-bearers:- Messrs H. Moseley, J. Forman, R Miley. G. Maxwell, B. Derbyshire and Dr. C. Morlet. The chief mourners included Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Burges, and Mr. Sam Burges, of Tipperary, Mr. and Mrs. . . . . ., of Midland Junction. Miss Neva Fenn and Mr. and Miss W. Burges of Mount Street, and Miss Hudleston.
