John arrived in the Swan River Colony Western Australia on 21 February 1830.

In 1834 John Randall Phillips was appointed a Justice of the Peace and a year later appointed Government Resident of Hotham WA.
In 1838 he was appointed Government Resident of Canning River W.A. and in 1843 of Albany W.A.

During a visit to Western Australia by Bishop Short in 1839, John and Martha took the opportunity to be married and have their children christened.

In 1840 John purchased the wreck of the "North America" for L400, with its cargo of whale oil and other items it proved a very profitable decision.

John is buried in the historic cemetery at Albany in an unmarked grave.
