In 1897 William King arrived in Japan on behalf of the merchant I. Marians and was inducted to the branch of I. Marians & Co. <http://www.meiji-portraits.de/meiji_firms_m.html> in Kobe # 55. In 1898 he was appointed Manager of the branch in Kobe. He remained Manager of the branch in Kobe, even when M. Marians took over the company; the name of the company changed to M. Marians & Co. <http://www.meiji-portraits.de/meiji_firms_m.html> In 1900 M. Marians founded together with his partner H. G. Priest a new company, now operating under Priest, Marians & Co. <http://www.meiji-portraits.de/meiji_firms_p.html>
William King was married to Ilse Atkinson in 1899 in Kobe and they were on home leave in 1900. When he returned to Japan in 1901, he was appointed manager at Priest, Marians & Co. in Yokohama # 263; privately he resided with his wife in Yokohama # 63 Bluff. From 1902 to 1906 he was again manager of this company in Kobe # 69, Kyomachi. In 1907 he returned to Yokohama as manager at # 263 and lived privately in # 157 Bluff.
