John was a Lieutenant in the West India Army 28th Infantry. He was reported as being lost at sea in 1869 and his mother commissioned a bust of him which is now the property of the National Trust number NT 537661 and held by them.

The bust is on display at Croft Castle Herefordshire the image displayed courtesy of National Trust and his descendants.
