  Research Notes:

The Ulster branch of the Cresswell family was founded by Captain Robert Cresswell, one of the " '49 Officers," He was a scion of the family of Cresswell, of Cresswell, co. Northumberland. Like many others from Northumberland and the Scottish border, he was a soldier of fortune and adventurer in Ireland, where he died in 1652. In 1666 a grant of lands in various parts of Ireland, amounting to upwards of 5,000 acres was made to Ulick, Marquis of Clanricarde, and the representatives of Captains Robert Gore and Robert Cresswell and another officer John Hughes, in lieu of arrears of pay.
