General Notes:
Kathleen Sheerin had a varied and successful life after a less than easy start. She was orphaned at a young age on the death of her mother, then sent to an Aunt in Glasgow where she was treated more like a servant than a family member. At the earliest opportunity she left her Aunt and set off working successfully in Glasgow, she met & married John Ryan a decorated WWI veteran, they started a family and moved to Manchester. The 1939 Register finds them living at 18 St Werburgh's Rd Manchester with young daughter Judith May 1939, and Robert C E Vanderzee.
Apparently Kathleen and Vanderzee were at that time estranged from their spouses and a relationship ensued1. 1. At the end of her life Kathleen made known to a close relative that the father of her daughter Judith Ann Ryan was actually Robert Vanderzee.
Kathleen was an extroverted woman, but lacked a father figure. She had a short relationship with Henry Rushworth, but left him saying she couldn't keep him out of the pub across Wilbraham Road which was and still is the Lloyd's Hotel. Ref: R Godwin
After that she teamed up with Cecil Upton, a stylish well dressed man. They bought a farm together, she was a keen horsewoman. Selling the farm they leased a run down pub, the Pack Horse Inn in Bircle Lancashire which they worked up to a very successful hostelry. Kathleen and Cecil were very happy but sadly he died relatively young in 1963.
Alone again Kathleen met Francis Knowles, like Cecil Upton a man of some style he owned a Jaguar car and liked to go to the races with a picnic hamper in the boot and some good champagne. Kathleen would no doubt have been pleased to join him, Francis died in 1987 and all who knew him declared him a lovely man.
