It is thought Joseph served his surgeons apprenticeship with Thomas Alston of Boxford his first Cousin

Joseph was a Surgeon from Bures St Mary, then Halsted Essex.

A Joseph Alston was admitted pensioner at Trinity Hall Camb 3 July 1748.

Joseph Alston surgeon of Bures single man & Susan Chapman of All Saints Sudbury single woman aged 30. At Gt Welnetham Bondsman to their marriage Lic was Thomas Alston of Earls Colne ESS Surgeon.

White's Suffolk Directory.
In 1725 Joseph Chaplin left L250 to be laid out in land for providing coats and shoes for five poor men, and gowns petticoats and shoes for five poor women of the parish of Edwardstone. This legacy and & L53 left by Sir Joseph Alston were laid out in 1809 in the purchase of a barn and 32 acres 2 roods of land at Polstead, now let for L36 a year with an allotment of 1 acre awarded to it in 1817.-

THE WILL OF JOSEPH ALSTON OF HALSTED CO. ESSEX Surgeon.
Dated 17th June, 1782.
After payment of my debts, funeral expenses and proving this will, I give my messuages, lands, tenements and hereditaments and all my personal estate unto Susan my wife should my wife die without selling said property or disposing of same by will, I desire that the same may devolve to Elizabeth Sparrow of Halsted spinster daughter of John Sparrow gent. of Halsted, subject to the payment of all debts and also to a legacy of L200 to Miss Susannah Baynes of Halsted spinster.
I appoint my beloved wife sole executrix.

Witnesses: Dansie Carter; Richard Hodge, his clerk; John Plume servant to Mr, Carter
Proved 26th June 1784 by Susan Alston widow and relict of the deceased and sole executrix named in will.

Joseph married Mary Susanna CHAPLIN [3697] [MRIN: 1276], daughter of John CHAPLYN M.D. of Sudbury [3698] and Unknown, on 20 Mar 1754 in Gt Waldingfield SFK. By Lic. Arch. Sudbury. (Mary Susanna CHAPLIN [3697] was born about 1718 and died on 15 Dec 1813 in Newton SFK.)
