Alfred was a private No. 23279 East Surrey Regiment 7th Bat in the Great War. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. His date of death was 3 May 1917. He is recorded on the Arras Memorial France.

His name is the first recorded on the Great War Memorial in Staplehurst Church, Kent.

A First World War volunteer scheme which issued an armband worn with civilian clothes by men who had formally attested for Army service. The scheme, which was introduced in October 1915 by Lord Derby, Director General of Recruiting, represented a final attempt to avoid full conscription.
