My dear Filibic [?]
I am so glad to hear you and your little son are doing well, at any rate it is to be hoped that you will be favoured with warmer and warmer weather every day now \endash We heard from Rowland the other day he is doing very well and has now set up a dairy. His last adventure was very bad but they got out of it safely. He upset them all in his buggy and the wheel went right over his wife's shoulder and the baby's head but they were neither of them in the least. Nana I regret to say is in a very nervous state one day very well and the next day very ill. She is staying with two Miss Bickells, such nice cheerful old ladies who are very kind to her and really if she doesn't feel well there, she won't anywhere. I am well enough but considerably down in the mouth, I can't get any work and I am jolly worried with Nana's illness and the farm and every post seems to bring something disagreeable, a sheep dead or a claim for a little or something wants painting, and now there is every prospect of our income from Maplestead being substantially reduced.
With best love
Ever your affec bro
Hugh Alston.

It is uncertain which of Hugh's siblings he was writing to, the Nana he refers to may well be his own mother ?
One wonders about Hugh's personality, which sounds quite normal above, he obviously had a high interlect being well qualified in two major professions, both with prodigious earning potential. Yet his estate was very modest.
