Ann was named after a book of the same name by H. G.Wells, she was born in Brussells (Belgium) and subsequently went to live in the South of France until 1930, where she attended schools in Marseille, (Mrs Brown's School) Ipswich, and Gartlet School in Watford, Hertfordshire. She attended university in Exeter, Devon, to read Economics, but left after a year to join the A.T.S., where she served for 3 years as a Junior Subaltern. Ann was attached to 426 battery of the Royal Artillary, serving on gunsites in the South of England. She married Thomas Andrew Brooke, an Industrial Chemist and Divisional Director of Dunlop Rubber Co. A naturalised Briton, he was born in Budapest of Hungarian parents and went to be a student at King's College London in 1938. Ann was an early member of the St. Helen's (Lancashire) Marriage Guidance Council where she worked as a Counseller for 20 years and subsequently, as a member of the Executive Council. She was appointed a Justice of the Peace and Magistrate in 1970 for the Petty Sessional Division of Knowsley in the County of Merseyside. She now works as a social research interviewer on various projects for Government departments and Universities.
