9. Thomas Sewell Alston: Will, 23 Nov 1899, Middlesex LND. THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT of me THOMAS SEWELL ALSTON of Odell House 9 Strawberry Hill Road Strawberry Hill in the county of Middlesex Gentleman I hereby revoke all wills and testamentary dispositions heretofore made by me and declare this to be my last will I appoint my wife Esther Alston my daughter Clara Alston and my son Tom Alfred Alston to be the EXECUTORS and trustees of my will and they and the survivors and survivor of them and the executors and administrators of such survivor or other the trustees or trustee for the time being hereof are hereinafter called My Trustees I bequeath to my servant Eliza Balcomb if she shall be in my service at the time of my death the sum of twenty pounds free of duty I bequeath to my said daughter Clara Alston my watch and chain. I bequeath the furniture and contents (not hereby or by any codicil hereto specifically bequeathed) of my said house as follows namely to mywife the furniture and contents of the Hall and Corridor the dining room her bedroom the smoking room except my Mahogany wardrobe the scullery the kitchen the Butlers. pantry, the larders in the cellar and the servants bedroom to my said daughter Clara Alston the furnitulre and contents of the drawing room and her bedroom to my daughter Minnie Alston the furniture and contents of the morning room and her bedroom to My son Tom Alfred Alston my mahogany wardrobe which is in the Smoking room and its contents and the furniture and contents of his bedroom and the contents of the wine cellar I devise and bequeath all the real and personal estate not hereby or by prior codicil hereto otherwise specifically disposed of and which I can dispose of by will in any manner think proper either as beneficially entitled thereto or under any general power the trustees hereinbefore named Upon trust that my trustees shall sell the said real estate and call in sell and convert into money such part of my personal estate as does not consist of money and shall out of the money to arise from the sale, and conversion of my said real and personal estate and out of my ready money pay my funeral and testamentery expenses and debts and the legacies hereby or by any codicil hereto bequeathed and shall divide the residue of the said money among such of them my said wife and my children as shall be living at my death and if more than one to be equally divided between them as tenants in common Provided always and I hereby declare that if any child of mine shall die in my lifetime leaving a child or children who shall survive me and being a son or sons shall attain the age of twenty one years or being a daughter or daughters shall attain that age or marry under that age then and in every such case the last mentioned child or children shall take and if more than one equally between them the share which his her or their parent or parents would have taken in my residuary estate if such parent had survived me provided always and I declare that if my said daughter Minnie Alston shall survive me (my trustees shall retain her share in my estate and hold the same upon the following trusts that is to say in trust to invest the same in any investments hereinafter authorised with power to vary such investments and to pay the income of the said share and the investments representing the same unto the said Minnie Alston during her life and from and after the decease of the said Minnie Alston then In trust for all her children who being sons shall attain the age of twenty one years or being daughters shall attain that age or marry in equal shares and if there shall be but one such child the whole to be in trust for that one child but if there shall be no child of the said Minnie Alston who being a son shall attain the age of twenty one years or being a daughter shall attain that age or marry then in trust for such of them my said wife and other children as shall be living at the death of my said daughter Minnie Alston and if more than one in equal shares as tenants in common I declare that all moneys liable to be invested under this my will may be invested in any stocks funds or securities authorised by law for trust funds Government or inscribed securities of any British Colony or Dependency the security of leaseholds or chattels real in Great Britain or Ireland held for terms whereof not less than fifty years shall be unexpired at the date of investments the debentures debenture stocks bonds mortgages and guaranteed or preference stock or shares (but not ordinary stock or shares) of any railway or other company in the United Kingdon or any colony or Dependency thereof whether incorporated by Charter or Special Act registered under the Companies Acts or on deposit with Whitbread and Company Limited I declare that the sum of one thousand pounds which I gave to my said son Tom Alfred Alston to enable him to purchase the lease of The Kentish Arms Mabledon Place Euston Road and also the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds if I or my executore should be called upon to pay it under the guarantee which I have given to Messrs Nicholson & Company Distillers to secure a loan from them to my said son shall be brought into account by my said son in the division of my estate and shall, be taken by him in or towards satisfaction as the case may be of his share therein IN WITNESS whereof I have
