Studied for the teaching profession in Ireland. Emigrated to NSW and took up a position with the NSW Education Dept teaching at Goonellabah and transferring to Cudgen being the first dominie in this cane village.
He retired from teaching and became Field Manager for Robb and Co until 1891 when Mr Julius sold his cane interests so then J.H. with wife and son left for Western Australia where he taught briefly, rose through the ranks becoming Acting Chief Inspector.
