Richard died as a result of a kick from a horse.
Extract from the Sydney Gazette of May 22nd 1822, page 3
Died at Windsor, on Friday the 26th ultimo, aged 17, Mr Richard Fitzgerald, eldest son of Mr. Fitzgerald at that place. This lamented youth received a violent kick from a horse some years since, which produced a continued epilepsy and after a lingering period of severe suffering, terminated in his death. He was a promising youth, much respected in life and sincerely regretted in his premature death."
