Rowland is appointed new Master of Giggleswick School Yorkshire
. . . . . The Archbishop of York declined the honour of examining the candidates, but later recommended that they should appoint to the Mastership Rev Rowland Ingram, M.A . . . . . the Rev. Rowland Ingram was elected. He had gained "one of the first Mathematical honours" and had only just failed to win the Bachelor of Arts Classical Medal. He was a B.D. and a late Fellow and Tutor of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He was turned thirty-two (his brother said he was thirty-four) and after being for some years a private Tutor at Eton had been appointed in Midsummer, 1798, Headmaster of Ipswich Grammar School, where he had made a considerable name. He was certainly the strongest candidate who applied and it speaks well for the Governors that they elected him, notwithstanding the fact that two old Giggleswick boys were standing - Thomas Carr and the Rev. Thomas Paley, the former of whom had a very distinguished academic career, and Paley had been third Wrangler. Ingram began with a salary of L200 a year and within six months premises were bought from Mr. Geo. Robinson, on which it was determined to build him a house.

Craven Bank Settle May 21 - 47.
My dear Maria and Kate,
Many thanks for your kind and united wishes of happy returns of my birthday the first of which following a day or two after receiving your note, was I am thankful to say, in many respects propitious myself enjoying excellent health and your Uncle Henry, after causing us very serious alarm from distressing symptoms of paralysis wonderfully changed for the better thank God. Alarmed as we were on Monday I wrote to his mother to apprise her and lose no time in joining our party
Page 2
she arrived yesterday and now partakes with us in the sanguine hope that her son's health will in a short time be re-established and having Arthur who accompanied his father from London also Aunt Mary and Marion, I leave you to guess how they are all a packed up. Your two aunts I think may be considered both better rather than worse for the enlargement of our party, though the bulletin this morning not quite as preferable.
There were certain others not indisposed to join you
Page 3
in your congratulations your father not deeming it absolutely necessary to engage a public crier took upon him to perform that office in the Grammar School the day before and stating, along with the mention of my age the arrival of an old Gigg'swk scholar after an absence of 38 years, requested Dr Butterton1 to grant half a holiday, to which there were no demurs. I have been just in the other room to ask for a few words to fill up what time will permit of this paper, but I can get nothing back kind love from all present with the single addition from Marion, viz

that Kate has not answered her last note. I shall now take this to the next house on my way to church, leaving it there for any addition they may think proper thinking that in addition to all your other laborious occupations, besides hated Botany your Grand father is cruelly imposing the extra task of decyphering (sic) his hasty scrawl. God bless you
Your affectate Grdfather
Rowland Ingram.
