bullet  General Notes:

William Giles, born Mark 1697, married Sarah Gilling, a respectable family of Gillings who for several centuries had held landed property in Mark.
As a result William Giles social status rose to that of a Gentleman.

William is commemorated in a plaque above the north door of Mark Church.
He was churchwarden seven times between 1730 and 1773.

bullet  Research Notes:

John Allen Giles writes in his diary; On my father's death in 1853, a large box, full of Family Deeds, was sent to Bampton for me, and furnished the greater part of what I know, concerning my ancestors. Other information has come from the Parish Registers of Mark, Burnham and Chapel Allerton in the County of Somerset, Astley in Worcestershire, and Wickwar in Gloucester. A coat of arms used by my uncle Robert Giles, together with an old deed formerly in his possession as owner of the estate to which it referred, connects our family with the Parish of Astley.
