Capt Edward Cuthbert de Renzy Martin, Yorkshire Light Infantry. For conspicuous gallantry in action. He set a splendid example of courage and ability and was largely instrumental in the success of the operations. Later, he twice patrolled the brigade front and greatly assisted in reorganising the line. MC Ref: Leeds Mercury 12 December 1916

De Renzy Martin, E C Category private papers Catalogue date 1988-02 Cataloguer PHR Photocopy of ms diary (28pp) covering the period April 1918 - January 1919 describing in excellent detail his command of 11th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers (25th Division) during the German 1918 spring offensive, including the fighting around Steenwerck near Fleurbaix in Belgium, the events leading to his capture there, his captivity in (briefly) France at Lille and Germany at Rastatt (April - June 1918), Stralsund (June - December 1918) and Altdamm (December 1918 - January 1919) and his repatriation. It contains numerous criticisms of the military inadequacies of the Portuguese and of the Territorial/New Army forces whose officers' indiscipline in POW Camp he highlights repeatedly as a disgrace to the Army, alongside details of German attitudes to and treatment of POW's and conditions in the camps.
