He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, England and succeeded as the 8th Viscount Charlemont, co. Armagh [I., 1665] on 4 July 1913. He succeeded as the 12th Lord Caulfeild, Baron of Charlemont, co. Armagh [I., 1620] on 4 July 1913. He held the office of Representative Peer [Ireland] between 1918 and 1949. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Queen's University, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland . He held the office of Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of County Tyrone between 1922 and 1939. He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Northern Ireland] in 1926. He held the office of Minister of Education [Northern Ireland] between 1926 and 1937. He held the office of Leader of the Senate [Northern Ireland] between 1926 and 1937.
