After Donald left the Church he was with the NZ Justice Dept, including Director of Research.
Appointment for Prison Psychologist.
Mr D F McKenzie senior psychologist at the Auckland prison, has been appointed the first director of research for the Justice Department, the Secretary of Justice, Dr J O Robson, announced yesterday.
Mr McKenzie, who will be stationed in Wellington, will be responsible for reviewing experimental work on the treatment of criminals in New Zealand.
He will survey the work being done at the Waikeria detention centre and the Waipiata open Borstal and will review the proposed periodic detention scheme in Auckland and the treatment of young Maori offenders.
Mr McKenzie who is 49, graduated MA at Edinburgh University. He came to New Zealand in 1946 and gained a diploma of social science at Victoria University in 1953.
He has held his present post and Auckland prison for nine and a half years.
Mr McKenzie said last night that during that period he had studied the personal background of at least 9000 prisoners.
"I am sure this experience will be very valuable to me in my new job" he said. "The post is an entirely new one and there is an immense amount of research work to be done on crime in New Zealand".
Mr McKenzie's wife is a trained psychologist.
