Joseph was a London tea dealer and an unsuccessful banker.
His uncle Joseph Fry (1728-1787) founded the chocolate factory that was later to become J. S. Fry & Sons merging eventually with the Cadbury brand.

Joseph married Elizabeth GURNEY [1993] [MRIN: 643], daughter of John GURNEY of Earlham [1992] and Catherine BELL [1991], in Aug 1800. (Elizabeth GURNEY [1993] was born on 21 May 1780 in Magdalen Norwich, died on 12 Oct 1845 in Ramsgate KEN and was buried in Friends Graveyard Barking ESS.)
