1. Arthur John Layard: As a young officer and in Balaklava Crimea, 1855. The image as an older man with his horse was taken in 1855 shortly before he died on the"Faith" in Balaklava Bay off Sevastopol Crimea.
Photograph of Captain Layard standing beside a horse, both facing left. He is wearing military uniform and holding the reins in his right hand and a sword in his left. There is a tent behind him to the left. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph: Captain Layard was aide-de-camp to General Pennefather during the Crimean War and died of disease in 1855. Provenance: Acquired by Queen Victoria in the Royal Collection Trust.
