William was guardian to his sister Annie's two daughters Elizabeth and Annie, their grandmother Rosanna brought them up.
Under the Eduction Act 1872 Avenel State School was locally controlled by a Board of Advice of which William, Shire Councillor, was Chairman.
William married Fanny SWAN [30398] [MRIN: 10723] on 1 Nov 1870 in Benalla, Vic. (Fanny SWAN [30398] was born in 1849 in Mansfield, Vic, died on 29 May 1927 in Caulfield, Victoria and was buried on 31 May 1927 in Avenel Cemetery.)
