bullet  Research Notes:

Julian Henry Layard was the oldest son of Frederic Peter Layard and Ida Gabrielle Betts. At the time of his death he was a Lieutenant of the 37th North Hampshire Regiment and an Assistant Military Attachè to the British Embassy in Constantinople.

Lt. Layard was on duty with the Turkish forces during the Battle of Shipka Pass in August 1877 during the Russo-Turkish War. He died of typhoid fever in the morning of 24 September near Shipka Pass, Bulgaria and was buried in a nearby temporary military grave in Kezanlik. In November 1877, his remains were disinterred and taken to the new Haydarpa Cemetery in Scutari (now known as Üsküdar). On 15 November, his paternal uncle, Sir Austen Henry Layard who was the British Ambassador to Constantinople left Therapia aboard the HMS Antelope and met the burial detail at Haydarpa Cemetery. He chose a burial site for his nephew near the Crimean officers graves . After the burial had been completed, a funeral service was conducted at 3 pm and Mr. Gribble offered up a prayer over the grave.

There is a memorial plaque of Lt. Layard at All Saints Royal Garrison Church, Farnborough Rd., Aldershot, Rushmore, Hampshire, England. It was erected by his brother officers as a mark of their esteem and regret.
