Bernhard went on a business trip to South Africa, returning home found that his hatred of the Prussians who had absorbed Schleswig Holstein was too much to bear. He was so impressed by the potential of South Africa that he finally emigrated permanently to South Africa and prospered, he later became a naturalized British subject.
He used the name Bernhard and dropped the letter 'i' in his family name which then became Burmester.
