My mother left school at 13 and went to work in a laundry that hand-washed linens and lace for wealthy patrons. Her family was poor, and 40 years later she still treasured the memory of a present in her Christmas stocking when she was a child. She described in detail how she first touched the outside of the stocking to try to guess what was in it, and could tell that the present at the bottom of the sock was round. When she finally pulled it out, she found that it was an orange, wrapped in tissue paper. Prior to that time. she had seen oranges only through the greengrocer's shop window, and I watched her reach back in her mind as she described how she first felt it and then smelled it, and then - oh, so slowly - took off little pieces of the orange peel and then - finally - the bliss of getting her first taste of an orange. Perhaps we could compare that memory to the heaps of presents that we now pile beneath our Christmas trees, and wonder whether we'll remember them as clearly as my mother did, and whether less actually is more
