James had been teaching at the Theological College in Kandy, Ceylon. His first wife died after the birth of their third child, she was a friend of Agnes Dowbiggin. The new family returned to England where James took up the Rectorship at Oxhill Rectory, Nth of Birmingham.

James married Agnes Louisa Layard DOWBIGGIN [27045] [MRIN: 9744], daughter of Rev Richard Thomas DOWBIGGIN [27033] and Letitia Anne LAYARD [27032]. (Agnes Louisa Layard DOWBIGGIN [27045] was born on 5 May 1873 in Ceylon and died in 1951 in England.)
