Maj William BENNETT R.E. [32459]

  General Notes:

William and Mary Bennett were stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the early 1800s. William commanded a company of Sappers and Miners. Their son William James Early was, and I suspect George Augustus was too, born at Nova Scotia. The other son, Frederick Hamilton, was born in Ireland. Major Bennett died of consumption at Gosport, Hampshire, at the age of 37, leaving Mary and her three sons.

. . . . .George Augustus Bennett, born 6 January 1807, was the second of three sons of William Bennett of Portsea, Hampshire, a major in the Corps of Royal Engineers, and Mary Early. William served at Fort Cumberland, Hampshire, and overseas at Nova Scotia commanding the 12th Company, Royal Sappers and Miners, Sicily in 1810 and 1812\endash 1815, and Ireland, but died of consumption at Gosport, Hampshire, on or about 18 June 1821, aged 37 years. Mary married Major Thomas Alston Brandreth, RA, some years later, in 1826.
