Description:
Peter Le Neve Arnold, gent of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk: commission and inquisition of lunacy, into his state of mind and his property.
Date:1852 Sept 23
Held by:The National Archives, Kew.

Commission In Lunacy.
On Tuesday last at the Victoria Hotel, before a jury of 20 Norfolk gentlemen, de lunatico inquirendo was instituted relative to the sanity of Peter Le Neve Arnold, Esq., A dumb gentleman, living on the Regent Road. For several years the unfortunate subject of this enquiry has exhibited signs of mental aberration and there being a considerable amount of property at his disposal, it was thought advisable at once to settle doubts as to his lunacy, and for that purpose, Mr Commissioner Winslow opened his court on Tuesday. Mr Evans appeared as counsel for the petitioner, and Mr W Worship watched the case for Mr Arnold. The evidence was of the clearest nature, and the jury very speedily returned as their verdict, that the said Peter the Neve Arnold is of unsound mind, and had been so since 1 January 1840. We have not room for a full report of the evidence much of which was of a most painful character.
