Cavendish is a Parish and village on the north bank of the river Stour which here separates Suffolk from Essex. It is only six miles from Sudbury. Sir John de Cavendish Chief Justice of the King's Bench and patriarch of the ducal house of Devonshire had his mansion here (of which the remains still exist). During Wat Tyler's insurrection in 1381 a party of the rebels seized the Chief Justice and dragged him to the Market Cross at Bury where after a mock trial his head was struck off and his lifeless remains outraged. Lionel Cresswell 1898.

1. Will of Nicholas Alston of Cavendish: Letter to Dr E L Fenn, 12 Jun 1899, Sudbury. June 12, 1899. 48 Sepulchre Street Sudbury, Suffolk.
My dear Sir Since writing to you I have found a will of Thomas Alston of 1469. I have also found that of Nicholas Alston of Cavendish 1511. (Wherein he mentions his son John) and there may be others between the dates of 1469 and 1559 when Mr Cresswell's list commences. Do you wish me to see to this? As they are not indexed and I have to go over them each separately. I found them late yesterday (Friday) afternoon and had no time to copy them as they were closing for the day, but I go again next Tuesday (as they only give me two days a week). I think you ought to have all of these. Very faithfully Chas Golding.
Dr Fenn.
Nicholas married Agnes [4885] [MRIN: 1609].
