In RE Alston Low & Co.
A first meeting of creditors was held under a receiving order made against this firm, who traded as merchants in the City and also at several places in India. It appeared that there were four partners, but that the firm was dissolved in December 1892, business being practically discontinued since that date. The joint statement of affairs showed liabilities to partly secured creditors amounting to L21, 810, the securities being valued at L5294, and the assets are estimated to produce L1505, a deficiency of L15,009 being disclosed.
The accounts of the separate estate of the debtor J. B. Alston showed liabilities L102, 837, the assets in returned at L522.
Messrs Drake Son, and Parton appeared on behalf of the debtor's. It was stated that the debtor's were desirous of submitting a proposal for a scheme of arrangement to the creditors, and the proceedings were adjourned to June 12 next in order that the proposal might be duly formulated and submitted to them.

Proposals to Creditors. Messrs J. B. Alston, J. H. Hamilton, T. A. Williams, and J. C. Low, formerly trading in partnership as commission merchants in Mincing Lane City, and as coffee curers at Tellicherry and Mangalore, in the Presidency of Madras in the under the style of Alston Low and Co have launched with the Official Receiver (Mr E. Leadum Hough) a proposal for a scheme to be submitted to the joint creditors for stop the debtor is a tribute at their failure to pressure by a judgement creditor and two losses by bad debts resulting from alleged reckless advances made by their Indian manager to native dealers without their knowledge or consent. The amended accounts show at the liabilities to be L21, 810, of which L16,515 one unsecured, with assets L1505, book debts to the amount of no less than L33,772 being returned as doubtful and bad. The official receiver reports that the assets consist of each in the hands of the debtor Low, as receiver of the partnership business of Alston, Low, and Co. Three of the Debtor's, Messrs Hamilton, Williams, and Low, Have Also Lodged Proposals for Schemes of Arrangement of the Separate Affairs.

In RE ALSTON, HAMILTON & Co.
The debtor's, James B. Alston, John H. Hamilton, and Thornton A. Williams, where in business for several years as commission merchants at 21 Mincing Lane, City under the style of Alston Hamilton and Co. The case was now brought before the court upon the hearing of an application for the approval of schemes of arrangements or composition under which the joint creditors will receive 10s in the pound, and the separate creditors of Williams and Low will be paid in full.
Mr E. Leadam Hough attended as Official Receiver Mr Muir McKenzie appeared for the debtor's.
His Honour granted the application, and also rescinded the receiving order so far as regards the joint estate and the separate estates of Williams and Low.
