Claudius was in the service of the Hon the East India Company's Service, and ICS. He was the last cadet on the Roll of Old Haileybury College HEICS & ICS 1858-1875. He was Assistant Magistrate and Collector at Poona. He had been a student at the Edinburgh Academy 1846-1851, and lived at his father's house, 7 Darnaway Street, while he was there.
