Archibald followed his brother Ivan first Matfield Grange boys' preparatory school and then to Malvern College arriving there in the summer term of 1905 and leaving the end of the summer term of 1909. He became a House Prefect and was in the 3rd School Football XI. He was also promoted to Sergeant in the College's Cadet Force for it was from this rank that he was commissioned into Army Service Corps (Norfolk and Suffolk Brigade Company) as a second lieutenant in December 1913.
He attended Wye College then served in WW1 with various brigades of the Army Service Corps (later Royal Army Service Corps), including spell at Gallipoli, reaching the rank of captain.
Archibald became a farm pupil on a farm adjacent to the Sandringham estate. From 1922 to c1927 he farmed Court Lodge, Great Chart, near Ashford, later, at Forge Dene (house), Bethersden. He moved to Dorset in c.1932 farming at Stone House, Stowell, Nr Sherborne.
