Know all Men
by these presents that I Clement Martin Edwards Lieut Col in the 3rd Ceylon Regiment thinking it right from the accidents to which all men are liable to make my Will do hereby declare this to be my last Will and Testament revoking all & every other Will or Declaration which I have previously made and declaring this to be the Sole Instrument for the management of such property as I may leave behind me in the event of my death annexed is a schedule of my effects and debts and the Executors after discharging these debts and any others which may be lawfully due by me I leave together with the produce of any further property of which I may die possessed to the Right Honorable Lieut Gen Sir Thomas Maitland and to William Gilpin Esq of Villiers St, Strand in trust for the use and benefit of my wife Louisa Edwards and my five children instructing that she shall during her life enjoy the interest of the whole of my property for her own maintenance and for the subsistence and education of my children I further bequeath that at the death of my said wife the whole of the said property whatever it may be shall be divided into six equal portions one of which shall be given to each of my four oldest children namely Thomas Louisa Mary and Clement and two of these portions shall be given to my youngest daughter Henrietta and this I do because Sir Thomas Maitland has informed me that he has generously made some provision in his Will for the four eldest of my children and I have therefore with a view to put them all nearly upon an equality left to my youngest daughter who was not born at the time Sir Thomas Maitland made his Will a double portion of my own property if any of my children should die before they come of age to receive their portions I then bequeath that the portion of the deceased should be equally divided among the survivors
In Witness whereof I have this 11th day of November 1815 Signed and Sealed this Testament all in my own handwriting in London

Appeared Personally John Lambert of No 33 Villiers St, Strand in the County of Middlesex & made that he know & was well acquainted with Clement Martin Edwards late of Sloane St, Chelsea in the County of Middlesex and Lieut Col of His Majesties third Ceylon Regiment of foot deceased for some time before and to the time of his death and also with his manner and character of handwriting and subscription having often seen him write and also write and subscribe his name and having now with care and attention viewed & perused the paper writing hereto annexed purporting to be & contain the last Will and Testament of the said deceased the said paper writing beginning thus "Know all Men by these presents than I Clement Martin Edwards Lieutenant Colonel in the third Ceylon Regiment" ending thus "Signed and Sealed this Instrument all in my own handwriting in London" and thus subscribed "Clem M Edwards" this deponent saith he doth verily and in his conscience believe that the whole series or Contents of the said paper writing beginning and ending as aforesaid and also the Subscription thereto to be of the proper handwriting & subscription of the said Clement Martin Edwards deceased
Jno Lambert 12th day of August 1816 the said John Lambert was duly sworn to the truth of this affidavit before me Special [?] Surrogate FW Pott [?] [?]

at London 19 August 1816 before the worshipful Joseph Phillimore Dr of Laws & Surrogate by the Oaths of The Right Honorable Sir Thomas Maitland Knight Grand Cross of the most Noble Military order of the Bath & William Gilpin Esq the Executors according to the terms to whom Administration was granted having been first sworn duly to administer.
