Of Lynch Court, Heref., and of The Tye, Great Bentley, Essex. Married (1) 1836, Kezia, dau. of Thomas Brown, Esq.; (2) Nov. 26, 1868, Emily Mary, only dau. of Captain Francis Stanfell, R.N. Died Feb. 10, 1892, at 57, Belsize Park, Hampstead. Brother of Edward (1837); father of the next. (Rugby Sch. Reg.; Boase, III. 668; Inns of Court; Law Lists; Foster, Men at the Bar.)

In 1881 John was living at The Tye a small estate near great Bentley in Essex left to him by his father.

John Kinnersley Smythies, spent a great part of his fortune in constructing a flying-machine and making experiments therewith. His appointment as Recorder of Ludlow was announced in "The Times," 9 November 1880. He was the author of a pamphlet entitled "Problems on the Motion of Atoms," pp. 23 (London, 1885).

John sought patents for a "flying engine" in 1860 and in hindsight may be regarded as a man of vision far ahead of its time.

John & Kezia had a boy and a girl neither had issue.
