John was educated at Rugby and Cambridge before being articled to Messrs McLean and Stileman a firm of ivil engineers. He worked on railways in Britain before moving to Argentina in 1871 as an engineer on Las Flores Great Southern Railway, Buenos Aires. Moving to farming he bought a ranch at Las Turbias in Santa Fe, farming pedigree cattle where his cousin Frederick Kinnersley Smythies had farmed some years before. Tragically he came into conflict with a disgruntled servant who savagely murdered him. No diplomatic action was taken and his murderer went unpunished. Ref: The Longcrofts by James Phillips-Evans
