Frederick left England in 1866 aged 17 to seek his fortune, with his family's backing in Argentina. He came back to England in 1873 to marry, taking his wife back to Argentina where his family was born. Returning to England in 1889 with his family he returned to Argentina alone in May 1890, his wife although she had indicated she would did not. In 1891 Frederick's marriage collapsed and he was divorced in 1893. Argentina proved politically unstable and suffered an economic downturn in which Frederick and his family lost a great deal of money.
