Evelyn was educated at Cheltenham, College Christ's College Cambridge then Balliol College Oxford. He left Oxford in 1907 with a first-class degree in the natural sciences and returned to India joining the Woods and Forests Department as his father had done. He rose to be the Maharaja of Nepal's Chief Conservator of the Forest of Nepal and retained that post until 1947. He developed a strong passion for the region's ecology and was a noted philatelist and author.
