THE WILL of MARIA ALSTON of READING Dated 19 Feb 1712 Will of Maria Allston of Reading in the County of Berks. Desires to be buried in a Vault prepared by her in the parish Church of Shinfield Berks. Bequeaths to brother Thomas Allston L10 for mourning. To Mary Allston her god-daughter L300 to be paid 6 months after testators death, should the said Mary die before that time, the money to be equally divided between William, Elizabeth and Anne, her brother and sisters, children of testarix's nephew Samuel Allston. To said Mary Allston, amber necklace and pendants. To said William Allston, L50 To said Elizabeth and Anne L20 each. To Mrs Dorothy Betts niece L10 To cousin Robert one of the sons of Mrs. Dorothy Betts L50 To cousin Henry Betts 20/- to buy a ring. To cousins Margarett and Avis Foster daughters of nephew Thomas Foster L50 each. To niece Mrs. Avis Foster daughter of testatrix's brother Sir Thomas Foster the silver plate now in her custody. The gold chain at her death to go to Mary Allston god-daughter of testatrix Maria Allston. The pearls now in the custody of Mrs. Avis Foster to go to testatrix's cousin's Prue Downing on the death of said Mrs Foster. Also to said Prue Downing L50 and the book called Gerrards Herball. To niece Mrs. Margarett Man L10. To nieces Martha Cuddy and Jane Manning L5 a piece. The legacy to Martha Cuddy to be for her sole use, the Husband not to intermeddle. To cousins Elizabeth Brockden and Mary Brockden daughters of her niece Mrs. Mary Brockden the sum of L10 each. To her friend Mrs. Elizabeth Exell, L5. To Mrs. Sarah Hollyer L10 also her wearing apparel Linen and household goods and the ready money in the house at testatrix's death. To said Mrs. Sarah Hollyer and Mr. Thomas Hollyer of Shinfield yeoman L40 between them To Sarah Hollyer daughter of said Thomas Hollyer, L5. To Mr. Adam Johnson of Reading, Baker, L20 To Anne wife of above L20 also book of Physical Receipts. To four eldest children of said Adam Johnson Mary, Joseph, Francis and John L10 each. To Anne Gold, her maidservant L5. For the poor of the parish of Shinfield L5. No relations to be invited to funeral, not out of disrespect but to save them unnecessary trouble.
