bullet  General Notes:

Sarah met her future husband in interesting circumstances. Their father had sold up his farm and stock in Ireland and booked to sail to Australia. The sale hadn't gone through when they were due to sail so fiery little Sarah [the eldest child] talked it over with her younger sister and they decided that they would come ahead. Money and notification of ship and date of arrival was sent ahead to the relatives in Gippsland. Romance blossomed on the ship but Sarah Jane wouldn't marry a seaman, so he came ashore.
When she got off the ship, she was irate at the fact that the Ellis relatives were not to meet her. Gippsland had turned on awful fires, and the relatives couldn't get through in time to meet the girls. Sarah never forgave them. She'd made friends with some delightful folk on the ship and visited them in Sydney.

The Secretary
Defence Department Melbourne.

Sir
My son, Cpl William John Julius No 17/4459, "C" Coy, 13th Battalion, AIF on active service in France has cabled saying "Doing Splendidly". This very evidently means that he has been wounded, and consequently I feel extremely anxious as to the nature of his wounds, as I have had no official information on the matter.
I should feel greatly obliged, if you could relieve my mind by letting me know what has happened to my son, or if it is not the business of your department to notify casualties, will you be so very kind as to pass this letter on to the right quarter that they may communicate with me as soon as possible.
Yours truly
Sarah J Julius
