Denis attended Warwick Public School and Oxford University. After serving in the military during the Second World War he joined the British Colonial Administration in Tanganyika as a Labour Officer and he retired at the age of 54 years. He was living in Christchurch, Dorset, England when he died on the 29 October 1987. Denis was godfather to both the writer, Jenny (Phyllys's daughter) and Linare (Shirley's daughter) and Linare has possession of all his war medals which include the Burma Star. Denis married Patricia Blain in 1951 in Tanganyika. There were no children from this marriage. He married Patricia Blain after obtaining his divorce from a lady he had married in his Oxford days, but with whom he had never lived, and it is believed there were no children from this marriage.
