Famous Family.
In the notes concerning the clearing of the Galle Burial Ground reference was made to Mrs Barbara Bridge enter Layard, who was buried there and was notable for having had 26 children (no twins).
The late Mrs Barbara Layard, of Grimmsthorpe, Nuwara Eliya, was her 26th child, while the eldest was the late Sir Charles Peter Layard, for many years government agent of the Western province. His son, also said Charles Peter Layard was Chief Justice of Ceylon.
The fourth child of this large family was the great grandfather of Mr FH Layard of Nuwara Eliya, and Sir Herbert Layard Dowbiggin was also a great-grandson of one of the 26th.
The late Sir Henry Austen Layard, the discoverer of Nineveh, was the nephew of Charles Edward Layard, who perhaps is the most important of all, having been the father of the large family.

Barbara in later life and her grave in Borella General Cemetery Colombo Ceylon.
Her remains were removed to this place from Galle Face cemetery in the 1920's when the site was redeveloped for a new Parliament Building.

Barbara married Charles Edward LAYARD [19197] [MRIN: 6903], son of Very Rev Charles Peter LAYARD DD FRS [19201] and Elizabeth WARD [19202], on 9 Dec 1804 in Colombo Ceylon. (Charles Edward LAYARD [19197] was born on 18 Oct 1786 in London, baptised in Mar 1787 in St Martin in the Fields LND MDX and died on 5 May 1852 in Boulogne-sur-Mer France.)
