Barbara never married. She was a well known watercolourist, and lived at Grimsthorpe, the last Layard home in Ceylon.

Her headstone reads:
In loving memory of Barbara Jane Layard Youngest daughter of Charles Edward Layard OCS born Jan 30th 1834 died Oct. 22 1914 God so loved the world.
