General Notes:
Hugh attended Merchant Taylor's School Hugh began his boarding school education. He then joined the Mercantile Bank in London later transfered to Madras, Penang and Qualalumpur, then Hong Kong in 1906. Hugh resigned from the Bank and went into partnership with Tommy Hough at Stewart Brothers Brokerage. He was an active Mason, a member of St. John's Cathedral, on the board for the Diocesan Boys and Girls Schools, on the board for Missions to Seamen, Steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club etc. He served as Aide-de-camp for the Governor. The Japanese invaded Hong Kong Christmas Day 1941 and Hugh was in imprisoned at Camp Stanley Prison of War Camp for three and a half years. He was released in 1945 on the Japanese surrender emaciated and in very poor health he went to family in Vancover to recover, before returning to Hong Kong to start his life again.
